Photojournalism notes

I finally finished looking at the photojournalism practice, and I have a few thoughts. First, some of you could use a bit more practice with this, and I apologize for not getting my feedback in sooner.

As such, I’m extending the deadline until Tuesday for your photojournalism beat assignment. That being said, I expect them to be good, taking into account my comments on your class activity and the notes here below.

First, get FACES, not backs, sides of faces or tops of heads. I saw bad examples of this in too many photos.

Some of you struggled with lighting. A little tip – if there is bad lighting, tap on the person’s face you are trying to photograph on your phone, and it should adjust the focus of the lighting on them a bit better.

Third, get close, and don’t crowd the image. I like this shot…

But I’d like it better if it was tighter on one person, like this:

Here are some other good examples from your classmates:

Remember, photojournalism is intimate, and it can be uncomfortable, but you need to get up close and really get at the human emotion in the story.

Don’t forget, bring your phone charged and with enough space to capture videos on Thursday. See you then!
