Today’s activity

You will work with the b-roll you shot Tuesday to create a social media video using text overlays. We will screen these videos in class Tuesday. Here is the information:

  • Add captions to your b-roll from Tuesday’s class activity using Filmmaker Pro
  • Your video should be about 45 seconds-one minute
  • B-roll shots should last about 4-5 second each
  • You may include audio, but the goal is to be able to read everything
  • Upload to YouTube, and post the link in MyClasses

TIP: Do your b-roll FIRST, THEN write out the entire script, THEN add the text in the video

Here is the social media assignment information and rubric, due Nov. 5.

Today’s activity & announcements

Here are the instructions for today’s class activity:

  • Head to one of our three partner locations to shoot b-roll
  • Get at least 10 b-roll shots (more is always better)
  • Interview someone (off-camera) about what they are doing, the class in general, etc. so you can write the text to insert
  • We will write and insert the text in class Thursday, so bring your footage then

Some reminders about getting b-roll:

  • Use best practices for b-roll recording
  • Shoot all footage in the same direction (vertical?)
  • Capture variety of angles
  • Keep the camera steady
  • Have the action come toward you
  • Add some wider shots so you can easily lay text underneath instead of over peoples’ faces
  • Show crowds
  • Lots of action

Class announcements:

Thursday –

  • In-class text writing and editing workshop
  • Introduction of social media video assignment

Here are some upcoming extra credit opportunities: (worth 5 extra credit points EACH on an assignment)

Video activity for today

For today’s video practice activity, you will need to get at least one of each b-roll shot (more preferable) from this list:

video_shots

Afterward, you need to interview a partner:

  • Have him/her describe the activity
  • Have him/her explain the activity
  • What did he/she see
  • How does he/she feel about this activity?

Save it all to your phone for our editing workshop Tuesday.

Photojournalism notes

I finally finished looking at the photojournalism practice, and I have a few thoughts. First, some of you could use a bit more practice with this, and I apologize for not getting my feedback in sooner.

As such, I’m extending the deadline until Tuesday for your photojournalism beat assignment. That being said, I expect them to be good, taking into account my comments on your class activity and the notes here below.

First, get FACES, not backs, sides of faces or tops of heads. I saw bad examples of this in too many photos.

Some of you struggled with lighting. A little tip – if there is bad lighting, tap on the person’s face you are trying to photograph on your phone, and it should adjust the focus of the lighting on them a bit better.

Third, get close, and don’t crowd the image. I like this shot…

But I’d like it better if it was tighter on one person, like this:

Here are some other good examples from your classmates:

Remember, photojournalism is intimate, and it can be uncomfortable, but you need to get up close and really get at the human emotion in the story.

Don’t forget, bring your phone charged and with enough space to capture videos on Thursday. See you then!

In-class photojournalism assignment

You will go to your designated location and take a minimum of five pictures using the guidelines here:

Picture1

Here are the guidelines:

  • Get at least one of each of these photo angles
  • Upload them to MyClasses by 2 p.m.
  • No need for captions for this one (Focus on getting good shots)

For Tuesday, read chapter 7 – Telling Stories with Video.

Good luck!
